Cheap Gas in Monterey Area

Description: Well, the gas price crisis is gone once again with prices in Monterey County averaging around $1.99 for 87 grade per gallon (as of November, 2008). We are currently listing the gas stations that traditionally have the lowest priced gas available (listed by cheapest gas (87 grade) by city reported by our observers). Hey, you can still save a buck or two in this economy, right?:

- Salinas: Salinas Arco (145 Kern Street and 385 E. Alisal St.)
- Salinas: Rotten Robbies (South Main Street) - Salinas: Pilot Travel Center (951 Work Street at Sanborn)
- Monterey: Quick Stop (2407 Fremont St)
- Monterey: Valero (700 Lighthouse Ave.)
- Pacific Grove: Shell Gas (687 Lighthouse at Cypress)
- Carmel: Texaco (7 Carmel Center Place)
- Marina: Beacon (3144 Del Monte Blvd)
- Seaside/Sand City: Valero (2100 California Avenue).

Prices are subject to change (and accuracy of reporters) but these stations seem to consistently be the low cost leaders.

We are all feeling the pinch of high as prices and oil companies are making record high profits. One idea that was floated was to patronize some of the smaller, independent stations and avoid the Exxon and Mobil stations. Over time, they would feel the pinch and drop their prices to remain competitive. Will it work? Only time will tell but there is no sign of things letting up.

Our family just switched from a big SUV to a gas efficient mini van. I have read about how sales for mopeds are exploding since they get somewhere around 70-80 mpg. Others are riding the bus or carpooling. Wouldn't it be great if there was a train in this area after all?

One way to save some money -- certain credit cards give you "cash back" on gasoline purchases. Costco 's American Express will give you 5%. When you spend $4 per gallon, it's like spending $3.80 instead (of course if you do not pay off your credit card balance, that 18% interest will get you).

One thing to keep in mind when buying a new car that we found out the hard way. The reported gas mileage is not always very accurate. Our minivan is supposed to get 20 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway but our actual numbers are 17 in the city and 25 on the highway. Some ways to get the best gas mileage are: (1) Coasting (2) Not slamming on the gas at every new green light (3) Not overloading the car (eg. things that would be better stored in the garage - not the trunk) (4) Removing roof mounted storage units when not in use and (5)properly inflated tires (can save 3% in gas cost).
